WooshCom® Announces Revolutionary Miniature DHEI to DVB-ASI Interface Adapter

WooshCom® Corporation, today announced the introduction of the first product in its line of miniature MPEG-2 Interface Adapters for use in cable television headends, satellite uplink/downlink sites and R&D labs.  This innovative product, a miniature MPEG-2 Interface Adapter, converts MPEG-2 transport streams from Motorola’s proprietary DHEI (Digital Headend Expansion Interface) to the world standard interface – DVB-ASI.

The product will be formally unveiled next week in Motorola booth # 2138 at SCTE’s Cable-Tec Expo 2002 show in San Antonio, Texas.  Mr. Marler, Chairman and CTO of WooshCom® will be on-hand at the booth to answer questions Wednesday: 2-4PM, Thursday: 11AM-1PM and Friday: 9-10AM.  The product may also be seen at BigBand Networks booth # 1130, where Mr. Marler will be on Friday from 10:15 to 11 AM.

WooshCom’s Model 3010 product is unique in its miniature size (3.4” x 2.3” x 1”), light weight (4 oz.), rugged construction and fully locking connections.  This allows it to be installed in a free-hanging manner amongst the cables in the rear of equipment racks.  This opens the way to installing WooshCom’s adapter directly behind a piece of DHEI equipment, thereby breaking the 12 foot DHEI distance barrier and enabling cable operators to enjoy the convenience & compatibility of the DVB-ASI interface standard. Once converted the signal may be driven over 300 feet.

“There is a real problem if equipment needing to get a digital feed from a DHEI source device cannot be co-located with it.  Up until now the only work-around has been the installation of a bulky rack-mount converter to extend the cabling distance so that the equipment could be located in another part of the facility where there is space.  But this really doesn’t help the problem because now rack space needs to be free up near the source device to install the bulky converter.  The problem is even worse if there are multiple source devices located in different parts of a facility that need to feed a common device like a remultiplexer or a piece of transport gear.” according to Mr. Bruce Marler. “WooshCom’s miniature adapter provides a true solution because it takes up no rack space whatsoever, and extends the range of the signal thirty-fold, to over a hundred meters and enables engineers to enjoy the compatibility of ASI.” points out Mr. Marler.

Competitive and fiscal pressures are requiring cable operators to be constantly evaluating and implementing new equipment and configurations. Facilities can simplify this equipment reconfiguration by standardizing on the DVB-ASI interface and using WooshCom’s adapter to accommodate the occasional piece of legacy DHEI equipment, such as a Motorola IRT. By standardizing to only DVB-ASI interfaces on remultiplexing and transport gear, future configuration changes can be easily accommodated with a simple change of a 75 Ohm coaxial cable. “engineers and technicians are going to love this device because their life is made a lot simpler if everything is ASI in the headend. It makes equipment reconfiguration a snap.  You don’t need to worry about whether the remaining ports on your remultiplexer are ASI or DHEI – just make them all ASI and ones life is a lot simpler. ” notes Mr. Marler.
